About BUCSIS

The University of Buckingham’s Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies (BUCSIS) was established in 2008 as a world-class centre for research into the key Security and Intelligence issues facing the UK and the world in the 21st century. The Centre is headed by a leading academic in the field, Professor Anthony Glees, and is supported by a research and teaching team led by Dr Julian Richards, a Security Studies specialist with a long experience of working in the UK government on defence and security policy issues.1

Staff

The Director of BUCSIS is Professor Anthony Glees MA MPhil DPhil (Oxford), who is professor of Politics at the University of Buckingham. He was a student at St Catherine’s College, Oxford and then an associate and senior associate member of St Antony’s College. His previous full-time appointments were at the universities of Warwick and Brunel.2

The co-Director of BUCSIS is Dr Julian Richards, who obtained a PhD in political violence in Pakistan in Cambridge University in 1992. He then entered the UK Ministry of Defence, where he worked for a number of years on defence and security policy, returning to academic life as a Research Fellow with Brunel University’s Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies in 2006. In 2008, he jointly founded the new Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies (BUCSIS) at the University of Buckingham, and joined the Global Affairs teaching staff two years later.3

Study Programmes

The centre offers home and international students innovative programmes in intelligence and security studies, which have a strong practice-oriented content prioritizing the development of strong analytical skills and a knowledge base to international levels of excellence:4
